Triple Crown: American Pharaoh win prompts jockey's donation to fight cancer

American Pharaoh City of HopeThe first triple crown winner in nearly 40 years will also help fight cancer.
Shortly after winning the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the triple crown, riding American Pharaoh on Saturday, winning jockey Victor Espinoza said he will donate his share of the winnings to City of Hope, a charity that funds cancer research and other types of medical research.
This isn't entirely new for Espinoza. He's previously donated a portion of his winnings from major races to City of Hope.
According to the City of Hope website, Espinoza frequently visits the City of Hope campus in California. A contingent of City of Hope workers actually took to the nearby track in Santa Anita to watch a simulcast of the Belmont and to cheer on Espinoza.
How much Espinoza won riding American Pharaoh still hasn't been released, but the donation will likely be a significant amount.
It appears as though City of Hope won't be the only charity benefiting from American Pharaoh's triple crown.
The Louisville Courier-Journal reports that winning trainer Bob Baffert will donate $150,000, splitting the money evenly between the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, the California Retirement Management Account and the Old Friends Farm. The two latter charities help care for retired race horses.
The horse racing industry is not without its detractors – in many cases rightfully so when it comes to animal rights. It's nice to see that some tangible good came from American Pharaoh winning the triple crown.
